I recently had the honor of interviewing Lianna Levine Reisner, MSOD. Lianna is building a multicultural movement for health as President and Network Director of Plant Powered Metro New York, a nonprofit organization she co-founded in 2019. After dramatically improving the symptoms of endometriosis and clearing up other health issues, Lianna was “sold” on plant-based nutrition’s effectiveness and the science behind it.
Her efforts empower local residents and communities to achieve transformative healing and resilience. She served on the American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s guideline development group for its 2025 Clinical Practice Guideline, Lifestyle Interventions for Treatment and Remission of Type 2 Diabetes and Pre-diabetes in Adults. She has also conducted interventional studies using Plant Powered Metro New York’s Jumpstart dietary change program in partnership with SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and with NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County. In 2022, Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center honored Lianna as a 40 Under 40 Rising Star in Food Policy. Lianna has a Master's degree from Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management in Positive Organization Development and Change, and she holds a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. She lives with her husband and three children in Manhattan.
We discuss:
Lianna's vegan story
Health benefits of eating a whole-food plant-based lifestyle
The mission of Plant Powered Metro New York (PPMNY)
Lianna's experiences as a vegan parent
Tips for vegan parenting

As the only vegan in her household, she knows firsthand how challenging it can be to stay true to your values when the people around you aren’t on the same path. For years, she put everyone else’s needs ahead of her own, but through her journey, she discovered the power of setting boundaries, living by her values, and confidently prioritizing her well-being. On her YouTube channel, The Confident Vegan, she shares inspiring interviews, practical tips, and empowering conversations about what it really means to live in alignment with your values. She is also the co-host of That Vegan Morning Show with Kimberly Winters of the Did You Bring The Hummus podcast.

It would be very hard for me to change over to a total plant based diet. I do grow most of our own vegetables. And I can change to include more plants and less meat. That would also be difficult for me but I can try. Thank you for educating us.
