Feeling Stuck? Reclaim Your Momentum With This Exercise

ree

Today is the 24th day of the Ultimate Blog Challenge. I have been consistently posting every day since July 1st! Wow! This is a really big deal for me! With that said, I wasn't sure what to write for today's post. I had a few ideas but wasn't sure really what to write about. I started thinking about my process for getting unstuck and thought that would be a great post to share. Maybe it will help you. It will certainly help me not me not be stuck on what to write (Haha!)

The decisions we need to make in life can feel overwhelming at times, especially when we aren't sure what it is we need to do. This can leave us feeling stuck, unmotivated, and avoid doing anything at all.

There are healthy pauses we can take. Sometimes we do need a break from thinking and doing. This can help us recharge and think clearly again. Eventually though, if we stay that space for too long it can have other repercussions.

Taking an action. Even a small simple one, can help pull us out of that place. We don't need have to have everything figured out all at once. All we need to do is start taking actions towards what we want, and the next steps will reveal themselves.

It's like when you are driving at night. You can't see much of what is in front of you. As you continue to travel down the road, more is revealed in front of you by the headlights.

Taking action is what gets us unstuck. It allows us to build momentum and feels good that we are taking steps towards what we need. It can be as simple as updating your resume, taking 10 minutes to go through a pile of junk mail, or donating those clothes you no longer wear that are taking up space in your closet.

But how do we even know what action to take? This exercise that I am about to share with you can help give you insight on your needs so you can create a plan that will help move you forward.

Get Unstuck Exercise

If you are feeling stuck about something, pull out your journal, a notebook, computer, or whatever else you use to write on, and answer these three questions.

Clarity Questions: Getting clear on what we want and need gives us direction.

  1. What are you feeling stuck about?

  2. Why are you feeling stuck about it?

  3. What do you need right now?

  4. Why do you need it?

  5. What options do you have?

  6. What actions can you take?

After answering these questions, create a plan for yourself.

Action Plan Questions: Taking action helps us build momentum. Small steps get us started. Remember, the rest of the way will reveal itself as you move along with your plan. Sometimes we might need to course correct as we are moving forward. This is okay! Sometimes we don't know what something will be like or what is really need, until we are doing it. The main thing is you are doing it and modifying as needed.

  1. What do you need to do?

  2. Why do you need to do it?

  3. When will you do it?

  4. What would happen if you didn't do it?

  5. What do you need in order to achieve this?

  6. What could get in your way?

  7. How can you prevent that from getting in your way?

I hope this exercise can help you get unstuck and reclaim your momentum. If you need more support with this, message me here to schedule a connection call.

These are great questions to ask yourself! I am going to use them for myself when it comes to writing -- they are applicable there too!

Congrats on your daily posts during the challenge! One thing that keeps me motivated to take action is a deadline. UBC gives us a (self-imposed) deadline for daily posting.
