Sitting All Day? It's Time for a Stretch Break!

2 min read

Working from home has a lot of perks, but it also has its downfalls. One of them being I get less movement than I used to. Back when I used to commute to work, I got more steps in. Working from home has allowed me to create balance in my life in other areas, but being consistent with exercise has been a challenge.

Sometimes I get a burst of motivation in the morning to go to the nearby gym or go for a walk. I always struggle with consistency with morning exercise (something I am always working on).  My time gets consumed by so many other things, that I sometimes just want to zone out on the couch with my tea and the cat, until it is time for me to get up and do things. I guess in a way this too is self-care. I feel guilty about it though because I know my body would be happy with me if I did more exercise. I am frustrated with the 30 pounds I gained a few years ago, after my dad passed away. Perimenopause and minimal movement during the week, make weight loss challenging.

I notice I like doing 10 minute workouts. It helps me feel like I am not losing all my limited "me-time". Doing some structured movement during the day feels good afterwords. I feel calmer and more grounded.

I recently discovered the YouTube channel "Yoga With Adriene". She has videos of different lengths. Yesterday, I disovered "Yoga For People Who Sit All Day". This video is just under 9 minutes.

I took a 10 minute break from my desk and tried it out. The gentle stretching felt really good and I feel more grounded. I think I have a limiting belief that exercise needs to be harsh and sweaty in order to be productive. I am going to make it a practice next week while I am working to do this or one of her other 10 minute or less videos.

Building new habits takes time. I feel reall y good and hopeful about this one. I will update you next week on how it went.

What is a new habit you are working on? Let me know in the comments below.

I love this. Taking time to do these 10 minute breaks is always great for limiting your stress. It gives you a chance to reset and reframe your mind before going back to your desk. Remember to put yourself first and know the work will be there when you return.

We sometimes underestimate what a few minutes of gentle movement can do. Small, realistic habits are often the ones that stick. Wishing you success with your new routine!

I'm usually always on my feet even now that I'm retired but I like that 9 minute video! Gentle stretching is great for me a few times a day. Thanks for sharing that.

I am on a similar journey. I can't stand needing to sacrifice my morning zone out to workout lol. I do a lot of yoga but I want to get back into lifting weights as it's better for my joints. Yoga with Adriene is great! I used to watch her a lot. If I want a sweaty yoga workout, I go with Cat Meffan. She challenges me.
