When it comes to simple, affordable, and nourishing plant-based foods, chickpeas are a true staple. Also known as garbanzo beans, these small but mighty legumes are packed with nutrients and can be used in so many different ways. Whether you’re new to plant-based eating or looking to add more variety to your meals, chickpeas are a delicious and versatile option worth exploring.
A Great Source of Plant-Based Protein
Chickpeas are rich in protein (12-14 grams per 1 cup serving), making them a satisfying and nourishing option for plant-based meals. They help support muscle health, keep you feeling full, and provide steady energy throughout the day.
High in Fiber for Digestive Health
Chickpeas are loaded with fiber, which supports gut health, aids digestion, and helps regulate blood sugar levels. They can also help you feel fuller longer, making them a great addition to balanced meals.
Supports Heart Health
The fiber, potassium, and antioxidants found in chickpeas can help support heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease
Helps with Blood Sugar Balance
Chickpeas have a low glycemic index, meaning they help stabilize blood sugar levels rather than causing spikes and crashes—something that’s especially helpful for sustained energy.
Packed with Essential Nutrients
Chickpeas are a great source of iron, magnesium, folate, and other important vitamins and minerals that support overall health and well-being.
The Versatility of Chickpeas
One of the best things about chickpeas is how incredibly versatile they are. They can be used in both savory and sweet dishes, making them a staple you’ll never get bored of. Even the liquid found in a can of chickpeas or water leftover from cooking them is valuable. It is called Aquafaba and it has an amazing ability to mimic the properties of egg whites.

I'm a big fan of chickpeas and use them in curries. My favourite way to eat them is as a red pepper hummous.
