Today is day 6 of The Ultimate Blog Challenge. I was going to write a post in advance yesterday for today, but things didn't go as planned. Today we have been spending time with family in Brooklyn and getting home later than I thoughtwe would. I need my computer to finish writing what I originally started working on. By the time I get to it, I won't be in the headspace to finish it.
I want to maintain my consistency on here and decided on a different type of post. One I can easily put together from the car.
In 2015 I read the book Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. This was a fascinating and at times difficult book to read. What a journey it was though! The movie is pretty good too. It's different from the book at times, but still deep and meaningful.
One thing that is consistent in the book and movie is one of my all time favorite quotes. This quote meant so much to me when I read the book, that I still think about it at times.
The quote is:
"My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?"
David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas
Sometimes it can feel like our actions are pointless and not impactful. The truth is, every alligned action we take towards a goal, eventually leads to a big shift.
When I first became vegan it felt like my actions were pointless, because animal agriculture still happens. It was important to me to honor my values and the lives of animals. Every vegan is a multitude of drops in an ocean of impact.
Look how much has changed as veganism has grown more. Companies are making product alternatives without using animals. More restaurants are having vegan offerings. I can now walk into a mainstream grocery store and buy vegan cheese and ice cream. This was still challenging to do at times, when I first became vegan.
Any big change you want to see in the world starts by being a drop of impact you want to be. Because after all, what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops.
I love finding new books and Authors to check out thank you for sharing this with us. Have a good day and be safe.
Such a great analogy, Jennifer. And it's exactly as you say, at first you may be like "what difference does it make if I don't eat animal products?" But you kept going because it's what you believe in. So did thousands of others, are more will join.
I totally agree, we can make more of an impact than we think, and it all adds up, thank you for the reminder.🤩
