Her Fight For Animals and Herself: Interview With Gail Eisnitz

Earlier this year I had the honor to interview Gail Eisnitz. Gail is chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association and author of the memoir, Out of Sight: An Undercover Investigator’s Fight for Animal Rights and Her Own Survival.

Gail has been vegan for two decades and winner of the Albert Schweitzer Medal for outstanding achievement in animal welfare. Eisnitz and her first book, Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment inside the U.S. Meat Industry, were the driving force behind a front-page exposé in the Washington Post that resulted in an annual multimillion dollar Congressional appropriation for enforcement of the Humane Slaughter Act—the first funding ever allocated for a law that had been on the books for more than 40 years.

We discuss:

  • Gail's vegan story

  • What inspired her to investigate farm animal abuses

  • Her work at the Humane Farming Association

  • Surprising facts she uncovered during her research

  • Her commitment  to her investigation work while going through treatment for breast cancer at

    the age of 35

  • Personal challenges seeking a diagnosis for a rare medical condition while continuing her work

Gail's determination to expose the horrors of the animal agriculture industry while navigating her own health challenges is inspiring. You can connect with Gail at https://www.hfa.org/ and https://www.gaileisnitz.com/.

Jennifer Shlomovich is a Plant-Powered Lifestyle-Educator on a mission to help others improve their health by eating more plants. Jennifer is also passionate about educating others about the realities of animal agriculture and how embodying a vegan lifestyle is a beautiful experience. As the only vegan in her household, she knows firsthand how challenging it can be to stay true to your values when the people around you aren’t on the same path. For years, she put everyone else’s needs ahead of her own, but through her journey, she discovered the power of setting boundaries, living by her values, and confidently prioritizing her well-being. On her YouTube channel, The Confident Vegan, she shares inspiring interviews, practical tips, and empowering conversations about what it really means to live in alignment with your values. She is also the co-host of That Vegan Morning Show with Kimberly Winters of the Did You Bring The Hummus podcast.

I watched a small snippet of the pod cast and I have to admit that it’s hard to hear what goes on in the meat industry. There needs to be better regulations! Better accountability. We are better than this.

I am fond of fruits and vegetables and vegetarian diet is great but vegan protein sources are often worrying as inflammatory .But I am sure you know the best way forward.Looking forward to learning more.

Vegan sources of protein are anti-inflammatory and include beans, legumes, quinoa, soy, nuts, and seeds. These protein sources also contain fiber and other nutrients.
